Billings Farm & Museum Joins In Smithsonian Magazine's 7th Annual Museum Day 2011

Billings Farm & Museum Offers Free Admission on September 24th to Smithsonian Subscribers

Woodstock, VT . . . On Saturday, September 24, 2011, Billings Farm & Museum, gateway to Vermont's rural heritage, will participate in the seventh annual Museum Day, presented by Smithsonian magazine.

On Museum Day, museums and cultural institutions nationwide open their doors free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors. A celebration of culture, learning, and the dissemination of knowledge, Smithsonian's Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution's Washington, DC-based properties.

Darlyne Franzen, Vice President of Billings Farm & Museum, said: “We have participated in Smithsonian's Museum Day since its inception seven years ago. Smithsonian subscribers have responded enthusiastically to the invitation of a one-day free admission with a guest to the Billings Farm – as well as nearly a thousand other sites across the country. We strongly support the goal of a free admission museum day and will continue to take part.”

Billings Farm & Museum, an operating farm and a museum of Vermont's rural past, also will feature a Traditional Craft Saturday on September 24, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with cooper David Salvetti demonstrating the steps and techniques involved in making barrels and buckets and the 25th Annual Quilt Exhibition, features over fifty quilts. Admission is free to Smithsonian participants who display a Museum Day Admission Card.

Last year, upwards of 200,000 people attended Museum Day. All 50 states plus Puerto Rico were represented by 900 participating museums;this year, 1,000 museums are expected to participate.

Attendees must present Smithsonian magazine's Museum Day Admission Card to gain free entry to participating institutions. The Museum Day Admission Card is available in the September 2011 issue of Smithsonian magazine and a downloadable version is available on the Museum Day website. The general public is welcome to participate by going to the Smithsonian.com website and downloading the Museum Day Admission Card.
