Billings Farm & Museum Kicks Off 2009 Season with Annual Plowing Competition
Billings Farm & Museum, gateway to Vermont's rural heritage, kicks off the season with the 23rd Annual Plowing Match on Sunday, May 3, when teams of horses and oxen from the region's farms will once again compete in the farm fields. Doors open at 9:00 a.m.; competition begins at 10:30 a.m. with the team walking plow contest and continues into the afternoon with the team sulky competition. Special activities will include horse-drawn wagon rides, visitor plowing with the Billings team, ox programs, and rope making demonstrations.
Competitors, working carefully with their teams, will be judged on their technical skills and how well they work with their animals as a team. Ribbons and premiums will be awarded in each class and a banner will be presented to the Grand Champion in both the horse and oxen categories. The Teago Volunteer Fire Department will sell lunch and snacks, with proceeds to benefit the fire department.
