Farm Programs for Young Children

WOODSTOCK, VERMONT...Billings Farm & Museum, announces its summer series of interactive farm programs for children ages 3 and up. Programs for Preschoolers will be offered in July on Wednesdays from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Each program will feature a different farm theme with a story, special visit to the farm, hands-on activity, and snack. The cost is $3.00 per person for Billings Farm & Museum members, and $5.00 per person for non-members (includes admission to the Farm & Museum).

Lucy's Summer. Wednesday, July 7. Join seven-year-old Lucy Wells on her family farm in the summer of 1910. Discover the Fourth of July parade, the traveling photograper, and the many pints and quarts of peas, beans, corn, tomatoes, and strawberries Lucy and her sister help their mother put up for the winter! We'll visit our 1890 Farm House and the household exhibit to compare with Lucy's home and enjoy a strawberry snack, just like Lucy.

Squeal and Squawk. Wednesday, July 14. Discover the farm as “poetry in motion” as we read poems from the book Squeal and Squawk, including: Frisky Filly, Cow Daze, and Barnyard Talk. We'll visit with the animals for inspiration, then create our own farm poetry. Did you know that A Chicken Will Eat Most Anything: eggshells, weeds, and watermelon. Which one will we enjoy for a snack?

Chicken Dance. Wednesday, July 21. The grand prize for the Barnyard Talent Contest is tickets to the Elvis Poultry concert! What talents do Marge and Lola have to win those tickets? Could it be bowling, swimming, or tightrope walking? Find out, and discover the talents of other barnyard animals as we read this delightful book. We'll visit our chickens to see their version of a “chicken dance” and finish with a first place snack!

Farmer's Garden. Wednesday, July 28. What do a butterfly, a mouse, a beetle, and a carrot have in common? They all can be found in the Farmer's Garden, along with a bunny, a redbird, and corn. We'll walk to our garden and discover its natural treasures, play “Pin the Vegetable in the Garden,” and enjoy some fresh veggies together.
